Update: Wounded CHP officer identified

California Highway Patrol Golden Gate Division Assistant Chief Paul Fontana, speaking at a 9:30 p.m. news conference Tuesday, identified the injured officer as Kenyon Youngstrom, 37, of Cordelia.

Youngstrom is a seven-year veteran of the CHP who began his career with the agency in Contra Costa County, then worked in Vallejo before returning to Contra Costa County, Fontana said.

Before joining the highway patrol, he had been a member of the Army Reserves. Fontana confirmed that Youngstrom is married and has four children.

The officer remained in critical condition late Tuesday, with some news outlets reporting that he is on life support.

Youngstrom’s mother and brother traveled from San Diego Tuesday to be by his side, Fontana said. Other brothers and sisters are trying to get to Walnut Creek from other parts of the country, he said.
