FDA and cannabis
An ongoing tsunami of support for patient-centered medicinal cannabis is continuing to spread across our nation. Thirty states now have approved regulated medicinal access recommended by a clinician, the most recent being deep red Oklahoma, after voters there approved medicinal only just last month. Four more typically conservative states are putting medicinal cannabis on their November ballots. Multiple polling services have indicated support for medicinal cannabis across the nation is exceeding seventy-five percent, with some posting results in the ninety percentile range.
Now that the Food and Drug Administration has certified cannabis as medicine, there was no good reason to come out against medicinal sales here in our town, and none now to continue with that view in light of the FDA approval. Unfortunately, some of our neighbors were adamantly opposed to any type of commercial cannabis activity, including medicinal only, pleading and begging officials not to proceed with regulating commercial cannabis activity. Three of these neighbors will be on the the ballot in November, asking for your vote in spite of their callousness toward patients like myself and untold numbers of other Benicians whose health and wellness is sustained by cannabis.

Who are the three you are talking about. I assume when you say three you mean Kari Birdseye also . She is one of the three that have already declared and forward the proper paper work. Councilmember Hughes has not declared at this time. So we will all assume you are not talking about him. By the way cannabis sales will be available but there has been hesitation until after the Nov. election which proposition/measure E will be on the ballot. I do believe it will pass and by about Mid-Year or later of 2019 we will have two cannabis stores is town. That will be up to the folks that are interested. We will have delivery also. Stan just what is your gripe? You keep talking about something as if it will not happen.

Stan, you err when you say, “Now that the Food and Drug Administration has certified cannabis as medicine, there was no good reason to come out against medicinal sales here in our town, and none now to continue with that view in light of the FDA approval.”
FDA has certified A single drug made from the cannabis plant. Not the plant itself. They may certify other drugs made from illegal plants…in fact, all the opiods are such things since you are not allowed to have a field of opium poppies.
I only point this out because we don’t need and I don’t want any more fake news. So I point out stupid remarks that are just simply not true-such as the one quoted above.

GW Pharmaceuticals has another cannabis-based product in stage 3 clinical trials for the treatment of MS spasticity. Cannabis medicines are making a strong comeback, with a super-majority of support across the nation. Only one candidate supports medicinal cannabis in Benicia, for patients, pets, seniors, and vets. A new economic frontier is engaged in our city.

Wrong Stan. There is wide support in the city for medicinal cannabis. Which more than likely is also all the candidates for city council in 2018. It is recreational and the placement of the stores that is the issue. There very well could be two stores in town which is the limit. Do you want a super majority on the city council to change the boundaries to allow cannabis on First Street?

Our school district will need to think about policy in Benicia when the Governor signs off on SB1127, making on-site administration of maintenance or rescue cannabis meds legal in CA but still can be banned if a district so chooses. Who could be against this?

I think it is time that this situation on the city council candidates be truthful.. In my opinion Mayor Patterson, Vice Mayor Young, Socialist Progressive Democrats Of Benicia, Benicia Independent, two other Democratic group are all supporting candidate Birdseye. That being said it is very apparent they do not want Lionel on the City Council. These folks are going as far as saying they will encourage the second Birdseye vote go to Strawbridge. Talk about a slap in the face to a very fine qualified candidate. It appears they think she is nothing but a very weak pushover. Sorry folks far from it. All of this is being lead by Vice Mayor Young. But the evil part is what this very bully type of person now wants to control the School Board to get rid of the School Superintendent. That is just revenge against Lionel because of the Superintendents stance on Cannabis. This short time resident of Benicia is trying to BULLY voters into his way of Socialist thinking. The bad part of this whole city council campaign is candidate Birdseye appears to support that type of politics. . Now that is not someone I want representing the fine resident/voters of this very fine city. I only ask the residents to do their homework and vote for the correct candidates for Benicia City Council. And one of them is not candidate Kari Birdseye.

Granted, I have anarchist leanings and I really think our local society is full of prudes…but I see no reason for medically necessary drugs to be either approved or disapproved by anyone but the parents and doctors of the child. When did our society become the one that says, “Everything that is not specifically approved is forbidden”? I musta missed the memo. I know, I know…there are all sorts of “doctors” and “bad parents” (in the opinion of others, at least).

The Education Code provides that any medication prescribed by a doctor can be administered at school. Accordingly, since Epidiolex has now been re-scheduled by the DEA to a place where clinicians can prescribe it, no district in this state can ban administration on campus of this specific product.
