It was a team effort that helped save a man and his dog stuck in the Benicia bay.
On Tuesday, U.S. Coast Guard officials heard a man had overturned his kayak near the Carquinez Strait close to the Benicia-Martinez Bridge. The Coast Guard investigated the situation. With the assistance of helicopters, the Coast Guard found the man clinging to a post near a Union Pacific Railroad bridge after two hours of searching. He was about seven miles from his kayak and had a dog on board. Both the man and the dog were saved.
The Benicia Fire Department paramedics treated the man for mild hypothermia
“You know he was well prepared,” Benicia firefighter Adam Malbrough said. “He had on his life preserver and everything on like he was supposed to.”
“The best thing to do when you’re in a small watercraft would be to have a partner,” he said. “So going out fishing with another party would be the safest bet because there’s always unpredictable things like that.”
