A 24-year-old Benicia man has been arrested and charged in connection with a hit-and-run accident that left another Benicia man hospitalized in critical condition, Lt. Mike Greene said.

The accident occurred about 2:08 a.m. June 21 at the intersection of East Fifth Street and Military East when 23-year-old Louis Miguel Torres was walking home after stopping by Bottom of the Fifth after his shift as door security at Rookies Sport Bar, according to reports from both Benicia police and friends.

Police said a vehicle traveling west on Military East struck the victim, then continued west, leaving the accident scene. Benicia Fire Department paramedics provided aid to the victim for head and other injuries until he could be taken by ambulance to John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek.

Greene said Benicia police received information about the accident after accounts were released to the public, and detectives, acting on those leads about the driver’s identity, were able to obtain a $100,000 arrest warrant for the man they suspect may have been driving the car.

The man, identified by Benicia police as Erik Knight, surrendered to detectives in front of Benicia Police Department at 5:35 p.m. Saturday.

He has been charged with felony hit and run and was taken to Solano County Jail, Fairfield.

Fundraisers have been arranged by the two bars.

A Rookies fundraiser will take place July 1, during which 20 percent of all beverage and food sales will be given to Torres’s family, said Alex Storelee, bar manager.

Bottom of the Fifth will have a similar fundraiser starting at 6 a.m. July 2, said Sam Adams, marketing manager. “We will donate 20 percent of all gross sales for the entire day. We will also be accepting donations to send directly to the family.”

Those with information about the hit-and-run accident may contact Detective Fred Ayala at 707-746-4251 or Sgt. Kenny Hart at 707-724-4244.

How sad for both families. Both the victim and the hit & run driver were so young. When will people get it through their heads to not drive when they are under the influence of something. It is so easy to call a cab or a friend or a parent for a ride. Senseless.
