Almost nothing went right for the St. Patrick-St. Vincent High varsity football team Friday night.
The Bruins hoped playing on their home turf at Dante Magnani Field might give them an edge against powerhouse St. Mary’s. Instead SPSV suffered its worst loss this millennium as the visiting Panthers enjoyed a 67-6 rout.
St. Mary’s scored at will against a helpless Bruins defense, tallying 33 points in the first half and another 34 in the second half. Tailback Tamarack Pierce was practically unstoppable, breaking off touchdown runs of 96, 49 and 36 yards.
St. Mary’s sophomore quarterback Ryan Jenkins found receiver Erik Philip for a pair of touchdown passes, including one that went for 74 yards early in the second quarter. Ron Smith returned a punt 50 yards for a touchdown and defensive lineman Ben Schrider picked up a Bruins fumble and scored.
SPSV trailed 40-0 early in the second half before getting on the scoreboard. Bruins quarterback Anthony Olmes connected with receiver Marcus Oducado for a touchdown with 7:35 left in the third quarter as SPSV avoided a shutout.
The fourth quarter was played under a running clock and still the Panthers managed to find ways to hit paydirt. A 37-yard TD run by Malik Floyd-Stinson with 3:40 left in the game finally ended the scoring.
St. Mary’s improved to 8-1 overall and 4-1 in the Tri-County Athletic League, half a game behind Salesian (4-0 TCAL) for first place. The Bruins fell to 2-6 overall and 2-2 in the TCAL.
The Bruins play at Pinole Valley on Halloween night and close out the regular season with Senior Night at home Nov. 7 against El Cerrito.
