A goal by Zack Richards eight minutes into the game managed to hold up as the St. Patrick-St. Vincent High boys varsity soccer team held on for a 1-0 victory over visiting John Swett last Thursday.
It was the second win of the season for the Bruins (2-7-1, 2-5-1 Tri-County Athletic League), with both victories coming against Swett by shutout.
Senior Musa Dajani dribbled down the left sideline and sent a perfect crossing pass to Richards, who banged in his second goal in the past two games. The Indians countered several times the rest of the night but SPSV’s defense didn’t crack and registered its third shutout of the year.
“We’re not used to playing with a lead,” said SPSV head coach Greg Coan. “We’ve been playing really well defensively. Our defense has improved quite a bit.”
Senior fullback Jamari Gammad saved the day with five minutes remaining. A Swett corner kick snuck through SPSV’s defense and was about to roll over the goal line when Gammad alertly kicked the ball away just in time.
“That basically preserved the victory,” Coan said. “I was very impressed that he’d been listening to his coaching and was where he needed to be.”
