The St. Patrick-St. Vincent High boys varsity basketball team battled to a 44-43 victory at St. Joe’s in Alameda on Tuesday.
It was the second overtime victory in three Tri-County Athletic League games for the Bruins, who improved to 14-2 overall and 2-1 in the TCAL.
“It always seems to come down to the wire when we play St. Joe’s and we were fortunate to come out on top,” said SPSV head coach Derek Walker. “This is a very competitive league and I’m just glad we’re finding a way to win.”
An ugly first half had the Bruins leading 15-9 at the break. SPSV led by 10 entering the fourth quarter, but St. Joe’s (8-8, 1-2 TCAL) made a furious comeback and tied the game on a desperation 3-pointer with under 10 seconds remaining. SPSV’s B.J. Standley had his floater to win in regulation roll around the rim and out.
But the Bruins didn’t cave. Senior Marcus Oducado scored to put the Bruins ahead in overtime. St. Joe’s tied it up, but SPSV sophomore Tavian Henderson grabbed an offensive rebound, got fouled and made 1-of-2 free throws with 10 seconds left to put the Bruins in front for good.
Henderson scored a game-high 15 points and D.J. Harris added nine points for the Bruins, who host Salesian on Thursday night.
