A valiant fourth-quarter comeback attempt to save its season fell short for the St. Patrick-St. Vincent High football team Friday night as the Bruins lost to the host St. Helena Saints, 30-18, in the second round of the North Coast Section Division V playoffs.
The Bruins (4-8) trailed 16-0 after three quarters but battled back with two touchdowns in a span of 66 seconds to make things interesting. Sophomore quarterback Michael Pappas connected with Marquis Perrilliat for a 21-yard scoring strike to get the Bruins on the scoreboard. SPSV’s defense forced a turnover at the St. Helena 40-yard line and Wesley Galloway capitalized with a 1-yard touchdown run to make it 16-12.
But the No. 3 seeded Saints dominated down the stretch. Quarterback Jack Preston, who had two touchdown passes in the first half, broke off a 53-yard touchdown run to make it 23-12. On SPSV’s next possession, St. Helena linebacker Jake Flood picked off a pass and returned it 17 yards for the back-breaking touchdown.
Galloway ran for a 5-yard touchdown with 4:35 remaining, but it would prove to be SPSV’s final score of the season. The No. 11 seeded Bruins managed only three first downs in the first half, turned the ball over three times overall and finished with 245 total yards.
St. Helena (11-1) tied a school record for most wins in a single season (2011) and advanced to the semifinals against Saturday’s winner between No. 7 Berean Christian and No. 2 St. Bernard.
