A Benicia police checkpoint in the 100 block of Military East on Friday stopped 459 cars, but none of the drivers was charged with driving while impaired, Lt. Frank Hartig said.
Far from disappointed, Hartig said, “It was another success.”
Benicia police periodically conduct the checkpoints, looking for drivers who may be impaired by drugs or alcohol, or who are driving without proper licenses or whose licensees have been suspended.
The checkpoints are funded by grants from the Office of Traffic Safety, and no city money is spent, Hartig said.
At Friday’s checkpoint, 21 motorists were diverted to a secondary checkpoint for license checks, and three were determined to have suspended licenses. Two more either had no license or had expired licenses, Hartig said.
The latter two were cited, and three vehicles were towed, he said.
Though no one was cited for driving under the influence, 11 motorists were diverted for field sobriety tests, which they passed, he said.
Benicia police announced the day it would conduct the tests, but kept the checkpoint’s location a secret.
