The Benicia Oldtimers took a 13-2 thumping from the Lodi Giants last Sunday at Fitzgerald Field.
The Oldtimers came into the game with a makeshift lineup and a depleted pitching staff. Missing their catcher, third baseman, center fielder and two starting pitchers, Benicia didn’t put up much of a fight against a Lodi team that pitched and hit extremely well.
Marko Santos singled leading off the bottom of the first, stole second and scored on a Mark Mortensen single to put Benicia up 1-0. Lodi took a 2-1 lead in the second inning following a walk, a hit batsman and a Benicia error.
Lodi added to their lead in the third, scoring three runs on four hits. A two-out, bases-loaded double had Benicia down 5-1. Benicia kicked the ball around in the fifth inning, committing three errors while allowing four runs. A bases-loaded triple did most of the damage.
Lodi added a run in the seventh and three in the eighth to take a commanding 13-1 lead. Benicia scored their second run in the eighth off hits from Ernest Holquin, Wayne Grapes and Cliff Henderson.
Benicia travels to Modesto for a doubleheader on April 27.
