The Monticello Empire League got the best of the Solano County Athletic Conference in last Thursday’s MEL-SCAC All-Star boys basketball game at Fairfield High School’s Ronald D. Thompson Gymnasium.
Using a big rebounding edge, the MEL boys dominated the final three quarters and won going away, 85-56. The SCAC had a 14-11 lead in the first quarter but the MEL finished the first half on a 30-18 run to take a 41-32 lead into the locker room.
The MEL poured in on in the second half, using a 12-3 surge in the third quarter to take a 53-37 lead and bumping its advantage to 68-42 after three quarters. The MEL out-rebounded the SCAC, 67-45, and led by as many as 34 points in the fourth quarter.
Derek Johnstone represented Benicia High on the SCAC roster and scored two points. Fairfield’s DeMoriaye Hart-Spikes led the SCAC with 14 points. Rodriguez’s Armani Reed led all scorers with 18 points for the MEL.
The SCAC did manage to win the girls all-star game, 59-48, despite having only six players available. Bethel’s Azanee Rankins scored 10 points in each half and led all scorers with 20 points. Benicia High didn’t have a representative in the girls game, though Keylai Broughton and Faithe Pangelinan were invited.
James Hyde Jr. was invited to represent Benicia on the SCAC boys team.
