The St. Patrick-St. Vincent High girls varsity basketball team continues to be its own worst enemy.
The Lady Bruins committed 30 turnovers and made only 9-of-24 free throws in a frustrating 47-40 loss to visiting St. Joe’s on Tuesday. Costly mistakes in close games have been a trend for SPSV, which dropped to 5-11 overall and 0-3 in the Tri-County Athletic League.
“Our goal is to shoot 70 percent from the free throw line and if we’d done that, we would have won,” said SPSV head coach Nadine Walker. “And our turnovers were ridiculous. You just can’t turn the ball over 30 times. If we’d had half that many we would have won.”
The Lady Bruins scored only two points in the first quarter and had to play catch-up all night. SPSV was in the double bouus early in the second half but couldn’t make its free throws.
Selena Caoile led the Lady Bruins with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Alyssa Sanderson made all three of SPSV’s 3-pointers and finished with nine points, and Kelly Dennis added five points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Wanna Wong had nine points and four steals.
