Derek Poteet of Napa High rushed for a game-high 122 yards and scored two touchdowns as the East beat the West, 24-10, in the East-West Charity All-Star Football Classic at Napa Memorial Stadium last Saturday night.
Poteet also intercepted a pass and East teammate Jack Preston of St. Helena High completed four passes for 57 yards and rushed 10 times for 43 yards and a touchdown.
The West’s only touchdown of the night came when Benicia High’s Tristan Batten, playing quarterback for the first time all season, threw a 40-yard scoring strike to Panthers teammate Weston Carr in the third quarter.
The West got off to a good start on the game’s first possession, marching down the field behind solid running from Batten. But the drive stalled when Batten was stopped on fourth-and-1 by Napa’s Ruben Gonzalez and Armijo’s Tyler McGregor at the East 40.
The East proceeded to march 60 yards on eight plays, with Poteet carrying the ball seven times, including a 10-yard TD run for a 7-0 lead.
Late in the first quarter, Bethel’s Elijah Summerise fumbled on a quarterback keeper and Napa’s Pierce Young recovered for the East, setting up a 5-yard quarterback scramble for a TD by Poteet.
Batten threw an interception deep in East territory late in the first half and Vintage kicker Jesus Rios-Vargas gave the East a 17-0 lead with a 34-yard field goal early in the second half.
Carr’s touchdown reception and a 40-yard field goal by Bethel’s Manny Lopez pulled the West to within 17-10 with seven minutes remaining. But the East converted a big third-and-long to keep a scoring drive alive and extended the lead to 14 points with 1:33 left.
