Benicia State Parks Association and California State Parks will be teaching people how to be volunteers in a free training session from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 8, Mike Caplin, the association’s spokesperson, said.
Open to both current volunteers as well as those interested in becoming volunteers, the training session will allow people to become official Volunteers in Parks under the state program.
Participants will learn about required volunteer paperwork, and receive orientation training and information about park districts and sectors, basic interpretive work and artifact care and handling, Caplin said.
Those who complete the training will be able to volunteer as nature, cultural or historic guides at the Benicia State Capitol, the Fischer-Hanlon House and the Benicia State Recreation Area, he said.
The Benicia Capital State Historic Park, 115 West G St., which has the Capitol, the Fischer-Hanlon House and a Victorian garden, and the Benicia State Recreation Area, on the city’s west side south of Interstate-780, with trails, fishing spots, endangered species habitat and the Forrest Deaner Botanic Garden of native California plants, are the only two state parks in Solano County, Caplin said.
Those attending also will receive updated information about other state parks as well as the two local ones.
Caplin asked those interested in the training meeting to register by calling Ryen Goering, Conta Solano Sector Superintendent, 925-673-2895, or the Benicia Capitol State Historic Park, 707-745-3385.
