A convenience store clerk was robbed at gunpoint early Tuesday, and the suspect not only demanded money from the register’ but the clerk’s wallet as well, Benicia police Lt. Frank Hartig said.

The robber escaped on foot, and the clerk was not harmed, he said.

The incident happened shortly before 1:43 a.m. Tuesday at the 7-Eleven store at 500 Military East, Hartig said.

The clerk, whose name was not disclosed, said a man entered the store, pointed a dark handgun of an unknown caliber at the clerk, and demanded money from the store cash register.

Then he told the clerk to hand over his wallet, too, Hartig said.

The robber escaped with an undisclosed amount of money, Hartig said. The man ran east on Military East after the robbery, the clerk told police.

The suspect was described as African American in his mid-20s, standing 5 feet to 5 feet, 2 inches and having a medium build, Hartig said.

During the robbery, he was wearing a dark hoodie jacket, dark shorts with a stripe on the sides of the legs and white socks.

Hartig said the department has no suspects identified by press time Tuesday.

“Benicia Police Department detectives have been assigned this case,” Hartig said. “Benicia police request anyone with information regarding this incident to telephone Detective Gregg Rouse at 707-746-4251.”
