Benicia High’s varsity wrestling team continues to dominate its competition early in the 2014-15 season.
The Panthers participated in the Healdsburg Tournament last Saturday and defeated all five teams they faced to capture their third tournament championship in three weeks.
Benicia opened with a resounding 63-12 victory over Sonoma, then clobbered San Ramon Valley in the second round, 67-3.
The Panthers were just getting started. Benicia rolled past Rancho Cotate in the third round, 71-12, and whipped Enterprise in the semifinals, 63-15.
That sent the Panthers to the championship round against Bella Vista, which was no match for one of the hottest wrestling teams in the Bay Area as Benicia cruised to a 60-6 victory to wrap up the title.
Meanwhile, over at the Castro Valley Girls Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, Shelly Avelino took second place overall in her weight class for the Panthers.
