Benicia High’s wrestling program did more than vacation in Hawaii last week. The Panthers also dominated the Maui Invitational and came home with a tournament championship.
Benicia tallied 243 points and beat out 28 other schools for the Garner Ivey Maui Invitational team title. Lahaina High, considered the best wrestling program in the state of Hawaii, finished second with 194 points.
“It was a good trip for us,” said Benicia wrestling coach Japheth Aquino. “It gave us a chance to clear our minds before the upcoming grind of a long season.”
The Panther wrestlers have been raising and saving money for years to help pay for the trip to Maui. The team also took time out to enjoy the sites – hanging out at various beaches, snorkeling and hiking, and visiting parks.
Christian Ramos (120 pounds), Lysander Mahilum (132), Mason Boutain (145), Joseph Hurst (160) and Joseph Salt (195) each won individual championships for the Panther boys. Shelly Avelino (132) won a girls championship. Tyler Kay (170) finished second in his weight class.
Benicia’s wrestling team will split its forces this Saturday, sending one group to the Northgate Tournament and another to the Healdsburg Tournament.
