Benicia High freshman Sofia Young won her second high school girls golf tournament of the season and the Lady Panthers finished fifth as a team out of 14 schools at Monday’s Bulldog Tournament held at Tracy Country Club.
Young shot an 80 on the par-73 course and won the Bulldog Tournament’s individual championship by four strokes. Young won the Yellowjacket Tournament in early September and finished second at the Sierra High Tournament last Wednesday.
Benicia played without Jennifer Eleccion – one of the team’s best golfers – and shot a 517 as a squad for fifth place. Lincoln of Stockton won the team tournament with a 483.
Rachel Mahrt, who won the Bulldog Tournament with an 80 last year, shot a 96 on Monday. Nicole Ramirez and Catherine Mahrt each fired a 113, and Kelsey Cassick rounded out Benicia’s scorecard with a 115.
“We had a lot of improved scores,” said Benicia golf coach Nan Prolo. “Things are coming together and we’re starting to peak.”
It was the third 18-hole tournament of the season for the Lady Panthers, who are unbeaten in league play going into next Tuesday’s 18-hole Solano County Athletic Conference Tournament.
“We’re getting a lot of 18-hole experience,” Prolo noted. “It’s hard to concentrate for 18 holes and stay totally focused the whole time. Playing these tournaments is making us mentally tougher.”
Benicia is a lock to qualify for the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II Tournament, which tees off Oct. 28.
