A construction worker was injured and an alleyway at 925 West Fourth St. was blocked after a car shelter collapsed Monday morning, Benicia Fire Department Chief Jim Lydon said.

The man suffered minor to moderate injuries and was taken by Medic Ambulance to a nearby hospital, Lydon said.

He said someone told Benicia Fire Department a roof had collapsed about 11:18 a.m. Monday. Emergency responders found the structure, a detached garage or carport, on the ground and the man trapped underneath the roof.

Lydon said crews spent 26 minutes using airbags and cribbing — pieces of wood — to lift the structure high enough so the man could slide out from underneath.

Lydon said he had no other information about the man.

The fallen structure, which was next to the alley, is obstructing traffic and has been barricaded, Lydon said. He said his department no longer is conducting an investigation of the incident.

Instead, the matter has been referred to the Benicia Building Department and reported to the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
