An author and head of a national book publishing consulting firm will describe June 27 how to get a manuscript sold to a publisher, said Linda J. Hastings, Benicia Literary Arts spokesperson.

The speaker is Randy Peyser, chief executive officer of Author One Stop Inc., a firm that pitches book projects to publishers and agents.

“Attendees will learn the essentials for selling a manuscript to a publisher as well as what not to do if you’re serious about signing a publishing contract,” Hastings said.

“Bring your laptop and be ready to work. Randy will provide step-by-step directions to writing a proposal that will get your book sold.”

She said literary agents get more than 1,500 manuscripts each month. Publishers are sent more than 10,000 manuscripts each year.

“If you want to get a publishing deal and more readers, you’ve got to know what publishers and readers buy and how to make your book stand out from the pack,” she said.

Peyser’s company edits and ghostwrites literary works.

“Randy is also a master of the book proposal,” Hastings said. “Recently, she helped a first-time author get a six-figure advance in a bidding war between three large houses.

“Currently, 33 people are under contract with agents or publishers she has found for them. Randy will tell you exactly what you need to get an agent or publisher to offer you a contract.”

Those attending the workshop will learn what topics are hot, those that are not, essential sales tools needed to sell a manuscript to a publisher, ways to make a manuscript stand out to agents and publishers, mistakes a writer makes in trying to sell a manuscript, preparation and research a writer needs to complete before marketing a manuscript, obtaining cover endorsements, tasks only an agent can do and how to give a manuscript a title that would increase the likelihood of sales, Hastings said.

“Randy will tell you if your book has the right positioning to get a publishing deal, and if it doesn’t, she will tell you what to do to get a book deal tipped in your favor,” she said.

Peyser’s website is www.AuthorOneStop.com.

Cost of the workshop is $80, which can be paid by check made out to Literary Arts and sent to Benicia Literary Arts, P.O. Box 1903, Benicia, CA 94510.

The workshop will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 27 at Carter’s Biz Café at the Commanding Officer’s Quarters, 1 Commandant Lane.
