Benicia – The Benicia Public Library is pleased to present a book talk by U.S. Congresswoman Jackie Speier on Thursday, January 31, 2019 at 7 p.m. at the library, 150 East L Street in Benicia.
Forty years after the Jonestown massacre changed her life, Congresswoman Speier tells her extraordinary story in “Undaunted: Surviving Jonestown, Summoning Courage, and Fighting Back.” “Undaunted” shares the personal struggles as a widow, mother and an outspoken victim of gun violence, that have shaped her unwavering dedication to her constituents and to fighting for what’s right, and fighting against waste, fraud, abuse and corruption.
In November 1978, 28-year-old Speier, a congressional legal adviser, was part of the fateful delegation to investigate cult leader Jim Jones and the Peoples Temple in Jonestown, Guyana. The delegation was ambushed, and Speier was shot five times at point blank range.
Speier is the U.S. Representative for California’s Fourteenth Congressional District. She is a recognized champion of women’s rights, personal privacy and consumer safety, as well as an avowed opponent of government’s inefficiency and waste. In 2012, she was named to Newsweek’s list of 150 “Fearless Women” in the world. In November 2017, she coauthored the #MeTooCongress Act to overhaul how sexual harassment and assault are reported and mediated on Capitol Hill.
Bookshop Benicia will be on hand to sell copies of “Undaunted,” and Congresswoman Speier will autograph books following her talk. Thomas Petersen says
She really has been at it for quite a while. I remember when she visited and spoke at my elementary school when I was a kid. I don’t remember in what capacity, however, I believe it must have been around the time of Jonestown.
