‘Meanest Man Takes Hospital Donations (April 2, 1942)

A new candidate for the title of “meanest person in the world” is the fellow who cut a caper or two here during the past week.
He is the person who stole two cans of money from the Pastime this week— two cans of money which was to have been donated to the Red Cross emergency hospital for treatment of you and you in event of war injuries here.
The cash stolen amounted to approximately $45, according to Mr. afford and Mr. McLaughlin. It represented donations of patrons of the Pastime._

Water limits may be over for Benicia (March 29, 1992)

By Sarah Rohrs

Benicians may soon be relieved of mandatory water rationing restrictions now that the state has promised to deliver at least 45 percent of cities’ and farmers’ yearly water allotments.
As California heads into a sixth year drought, Benicia is in far better shape than it was in 1991, when the state delivered only 10 percent of State water Project supplies and Benicians were put under 15 percent water-rationing program.
February rain and snowstorms have increased the state’s delivery to 45 percent of Benicia’s yearly allotment and also provided the city with about 800 acre-feet of “unscheduled” water produced as a result of the rains.
An acre-foot of water is about 325,000 gallons. Benicia’s yearly allotment from the state is 12,300 acre-feet.

The full articles of these and other stories are available on microfilm at the Benicia Public Library.
