Landscaping of recreation center to start next week (March 26, 1942)

Work of landscaping the picnic area and grounds around the new tennis courts at the recreation Center between L and K streets near First, is to get under way early next week.
This was announced by L.H. Hamann, high school principal, following a conference with a representative of the landscape organization of the California Nursery Company of Niles, here with final plans for the work.
Work to be done, at a cost of $2200, includes planting 20 shade trees, two of which will be full grown pines, planting lawn in the area north of the tennis courts and near the large fireplace, installation of gravel paths, planting a hedge around the children’s play area and surfacing of the same area, and planting of honeysuckle vines on the fence surrounding the tennis courts.

City’s parking meters ordered taken out (March 23, 1967)

Benicia got around to following the trend in Solano County by ordering the city’s parking meters on First Street and certain side streets removed immediately during a 90-day trial period. At the same time Tuesday night. The City Council ordered a one-hour parking limit on First Street established with a foot patrolman to enforce the new parking regulation. Benicia’s action in ordering the meters removed leaves only Vallejo in the county still using them. Vacaville’s were the first to go and then Fairfield.
As soon as the one-hour parking areas can be posted and the meter heads removed, the new parking ordinance will be enforced.
The ordinance is expected to provide for a $1 fine for over-parking.

The award based on test scores and other data, has been given to schools since 1985, when Senate Bill 813 was passed by the Legislature to increase accountability in schools.
Benicia was the only school in Solano County to receive the award this year and is only the third in Solano to receive the honor.
