Three Benicia Unified school board seats up for re-election

June 1, 2016 by Nick Sestanovich Leave a Comment

Three seats on the Benicia Unified School District’s Governing Board are up for re-election this November, and the board will be voting to approve a resolution specifying the date and purpose of the election at this Thurdsay’s meeting- the last of the 2015-16 school year.

Pursuant to Education Code section 5017, the terms of three board members will expire on Dec. 2 with their seats up for election in the Nov. 8 general election. The three board members are President Gary Wing and trustees Andre Stewart and Stacy Heldman-Holguin, the latter of whom will be serving a two-year term. Heldman-Holguin was appointed in January to fill out the remaining term of Rosie Switzer, who died in November. If she wins, Heldman-Holguin will serve a two-year term after which she will return to the normal four-year rotation.

In accordance with EC section 5322, BUSD needs to deliver the resolution to Solano County Superintendent of Schools Jay Speck by July 8, which is 123 days before the election.

“The candidates, including incumbents, will pay the costs of the publication of the optional candidate’s statement to be included in the sample ballot, pursuant to Election Code section 13307, and the candidate’s statement shall not exceed 200 words,” according to a memorandum sent out by Speck.

BUSD superintendent Charles Young will be leading the discussion to approve the resolution.

In other business, the board will be voting to approve the course outlines for new classes at Liberty and Benicia High School, including AP Drawing, AP Computer Science Principles, speech and debate, and Integrated Math 3 Honors. The list also includes pre-existing courses that have either had their curriculums updated or were submitted to be approved as UC requirements, including teaching career paths, musical theater, Culinary Arts 1 and 2, student leadership, advanced dance and advanced drama. There will also be an Integrated Math 1A course to be offered in the spring semester for students who fail the first semester of Integrated Math 1.

The board will meet at 7 p.m., Thursday, in the Benicia Unified School District Board Room at the district building on 350 East K Street. There will be an earlier closed session at 5 p.m.
