The Tech Buzz: Using good security habits on your computer to prevent malware

June 30, 2016 by Anthony Regina Leave a Comment

1. Reduce the risk of getting malware on your computer in the first place by using a good anti-virus program._Keep the software up to date, as new viruses are being written constantly. Not all security software is the same, so be sure to do your due diligence. Whatever security software you choose, do NOT use the free software, because it is worth exactly what you paid for it. We highly recommend you do your research and even ask friends and co-workers what they use. For Businesses we recommend a managed security solution so your IT provider does the monitoring remotely so you can have a worry free experience and not have to worry using your valuable time with virus and malware issues.

2. Use excellent passwords._You must make it difficult for an attacker to guess your passwords. Use different passwords for different programs and always include a mix of upper and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols.
a. Never choose an option that may be offered for your computer to “remember” your password.

3. Use a firewall on your computer._If your computer offers the option of this, make sure that it is enabled. The firewall can prevent an attack before it gets to your computer.
Download a different anti-virus program from your installed one._Your normal anti-virus program may have missed the viruses, so it is good policy to install a new and specific program.
a. Malwarebytes is an excellent anti malware program, is free and easy to use. Download from malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/
b. HitmanPro can remove rootkits. Download from surfright.nl/en/downloads.

4. Scan your computer in safe mode with networking
a. Restart your computer and hold down the F8 key (if you are using Windows). Remember that you must press this key before you see the Windows startup logo.
b. Look for the Advanced Options screen and select Startup Settings. Using the arrow keys, highlight “Safe Mode with Networking” and press “Enter.”

5. Delete your temporary files by using the “Disc Cleanup” utility._Find this by going to Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Cleanup. This may speed up the scanning procedure.

6. Run the new virus scanner that you have installed._Follow the process until it is complete. If the program has discovered viruses or malware, follow the instructions to delete them.

7. Run your normal virus scanner as a full scan._This may take 60 minutes or more to complete.

8. If you are still having problems after following all of these steps, or your computer is infected with a rootkit, you may have to reinstall Windows to remove a deep-seated virus or malware.

9. Check your homepage before launching the web browser. Click Start, Control Panel and Internet Options. If you don’t recognize the home page, you may still be infected.

10. After removing malware, you may need to also fix registry problems. A registry cleaner (CCleaner is a popular free option) can help with this task.
