Sustainable Solano to host composting workshops

June 22, 2017 by Nick Sestanovich Leave a Comment

Sustainable Solano does not want your waste to go to waste. They will be demonstrating how to effectively compost in an upcoming workshop.

The local volunteer organization, in conjunction with Republic Services, will present an educational series titled “Healthy Soil, Healthy Planet.”The workshop will consist of a presentation, followed by an outdoor demonstration. Both components are expected to last from 45 minutes to an hour. The presentation will go over all aspects of composting in residential environments, including the basics of composting and various techniques such as earthworms.

After the presentation, the class will convene to one of Benicia’s Demonstration Food Forests for a hands-on demonstration on how to create a small compost area in one’s yard while managing the soil health within the garden. Such components include studying soil conditions within the garden and discussions of potential problems within the garden.

Both classes will be led by Kathleen Huffman, the owner of the Fairfield-based landscaping company The Repurposed Okie, named for the fact that her parents raised organic fruits and vegetables on their farm in Oklahoma. The locations will be in two separate permaculture food forests. Both locations will have chickens, birds that are well-known for their waste transforming abilities.

This free workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., Saturday, June 24. The workshop will begin at a private residence whose location will be provided upon registration at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/turn-your-waste-into-want-tickets-34020210365.
