Whether it’s a street light that doesn’t come on at night or one that is shining during the day, Benicia Public Works employees are asking residents to report the malfunction.

Benicia completed a streetlight retrofitting project in December 2012, converting 2,300 existing high-pressure sodium lamps to more energy-efficient light-emitting diode (LED) or induction-light lamps.

“This project reduced electricity use and greenhouse gas emissions,” Public Works Director Graham Wadsworth said. The conversion is expected to pay for itself in less than eight years, he said.

Since the project’s completion, Benicia’s Public Works Department Maintenance Division has been responsible for maintaining the retrofitted streetlights, contracting with Siemens Industries for the work.

To reduce costs, Siemens employees are surveying major streets four times a year, and city maintenance employees are making their own examinations of residential streets on a rotating basis at the same time they answer calls reporting street, water and sewer issues.

In the meantime, Wadsworth said, residents can help monitor the lights, reporting any problems they see.

They can call 800-LIGHTS ON (800-544-4876) to be connected directly with Siemens. Or they may call the Public Works Department at 707-746-4240.
