Stingrays race past Piranhas

The Benicia Stingrays won their second straight Tri County Swim League meet by knocking off the host Hercules Piranhas last Saturday, 448-254.

Benicia’s boys won 220-134 thanks to a strong showing from their 13-14 swimmers. Nate Freeman, Joey Birdseye, Elian Salindong and Andrew Maichel broke a six-year-old Stingrays 13-14 boys record in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:45.02 and also won the medley relay (2:00.65). Maichel won the 50-yard freestyle (25.11), backstroke (30.62) and 100-yard IM (1:06.27) while Salindong won the 50-yard butterfly (28.25) and breaststroke (32.31).

Jake Rafac shined for Benicia’s 15-18 boys, winning the 100-yard freestyle (57.62), butterfly (1:04.71) and IM (1:04.37). Robert Patocchi took first place in the backstroke (1:05.94).

Pierce Tenret won the 50-yard freestyle (31.57) and the butterfly (35.80) for the 11-12 boys while teammate Camron Jacobson won the breaststroke (37.78). Tenret, Jacobson, Joey Patocchi and Jacob Manipis took first in the 200-yard freestyle relay (2:17.94).

In boys 9-10 action, Bryce Mincy won the 50-yard butterfly (44.28) while Aidian Zambrano won the backstroke (51.36). Mincy, Zambrano, Kai Zambrano and Clay Zielstorff won the 200-yard freestyle relay (2:58.75).

Benicia’s 7-8 boys received strong performances from Vincent Perelli and William Klubben. Perelli won the 25-yard freestyle (16.79) and breaststroke (25.17) while Klubben took first in the butterfly (20.39) and backstroke (21.60). Perelli, Klubben, William Fade and Lucas Cagnon won the 100-yard freestyle relay (1:29.02) and medley relay (1:35.38).

Ryan Klubben dominated the 6-under boys division, winning the 25-yard freestyle (20.16), butterfly (23.34) and breaststroke (27.93). John Sauter won the backstroke (1:10.60) and joined Klubben, Tyler Ackelbein and Conor Smith to win the 100-yard freestyle relay (3:14.53) and medley relay (2:56.97).

In girls swimming, Gabriella Tenret achieved a Gold time while winning the 13-14 division butterfly (30.62). Other 13-14 girls individual winners included Chloe Cotsifas (breaststroke, IM), Amber Iniguez (backstroke) and Jessica Scott (Gold time in freestyle). Cassidy Mcguire won the backstroke, breaststroke and IM for Benicia’s 15-18 girls, with Gabrielle Wirth winning the butterfly.

Other individual winners for Benicia’s girls included Madison Smith-Rambo, Emily Davis, Sophia Roth, Julia Sovak, Mackenzie Mincy, Vanessa Sandoval, Claire Smith and Shiya Crawford.

Benicia will take part in the Battle of the Ages this Saturday and Sunday in Pleasant Hill.
