A strong showing from their 7-8 and 11-12 division boys helped the Benicia Stingrays swim past host American Canyon last weekend, 388-289, to remain undefeated this season.
Benicia’s boys won 207-108 thanks to clean sweeps by their 7-8 and 11-12 squads. Mario Bonini won the 50-yard freestyle (34.40) and the butterfly (43.47) for the 11-12s, with teammate Jason Ikenaga winning the backstroke (44.59) and breaststroke (42.41). Camron Jacobson won the 100 IM (1:28.78) and teamed with Ikenaga, Bonini and Daniel Goncharov to win the 200-yard medley relay. Goncharav, Bonini, Ikenaga and Jacob Manipis took first in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Aden Li was a big part of Benicia’s 7-8 sweep, winning the 25-yard freestyle (16.75), breaststroke (23.13) and backstroke (18.88). Bryce Mincy captured the butterfly (19.75) and Mario Stump took first in the 100-yard IM (1:59.06). Li teamed with Stump, Mincy and Vincent Perelli to win the 100-yard freestyle relay and medley relay (1:30.84).
Benicia’s 13-14 boys almost swept American Canyon but took second in the 50-yard breaststroke. Andrew Maichel won the freestyle (27.12), Jake Rafac took the butterfly (30.94), Robert Patocchi captured the backstroke (31.93) and Jacob Hoenig won the 100-yard IM (1:14.97). Rafac, Hoenig, Maichel and Elian Salindong took first in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:51.53). Patocchi, Salindong, Rafac and Maichel won the medley relay (2:09.19).
Benicia’s 9-10 boys also swam well, with Pierce Tenret winning the 50-yard freestyle (34.90), butterfly (41.09) and breaststroke (49.68). Joey Patocchi took first in the backstroke (44.66). Timothy Knox won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:22.87) and IM (1:16.00) for the Stingray 15-18 boys. Javier Baker won the 25-yard freestyle (39.68) for Benicia’s 6-under boys.
Benicia’s girls needed a sweep from their 13-14 swimmers to tie American Canyon, 181-181. Julia Lindemuth won the 50-yard freestyle (28.12), breaststroke (37.75) and butterfly (32.12) for the Stingrays. Jessica Scott took first in the backstroke (36.56) and Chloe Cotsifas captured the 100-yard IM (1:16.69). Lindemuth, Scott, Sabrina Peterson and Ashlynn Smith took first in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:55.53) while Lindemuth, Cotsifas, Kelsey Jacobson and Cassidy Mcguire captured the medley relay (2:10.50).
Katya Wills won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:24.07) for Benicia’s 15-18 girls and teammate Tara Othman won the butterfly (1:21.31). Othman, Wills, Taylor Stump and Alexa Jacobson won the 200-yard medley relay (2:18.00).
Emma Lindemuth won the 50-yard freestyle (31.25) for the 11-12 girls while Emily Davis won the 50-yard backstroke for the 9-10 girls. Caroline Kelley took first in the 25-yard butterfly (30.37) for Benicia’s 7-8 girls and teammate Mackenzie Mincy won the backstroke (26.88).
In the 6-under girls division, Ellen Goncharov won the 25-yard backstroke (34.90) and teamed with Lila Fellman, Madison Smith-Rambo and Ali Largaespada to win the 100-yard freestyle relay (1:59.16) and medley relay (2:45.44).
The Stingrays will compete in the Battle of the Ages meet this Saturday and Sunday in Pleasant Hill. The Battle of the Ages is an age group pure event where 10 year olds swim against 10 year olds, etc.
