Stingrays hold their own at ECI

The Benicia Stingrays swim team took seventh place in the ‘A’ division and fourth place in the ‘B’ division at last weekend’s competitive East County Invitational, held at Los Medanos College in Pittsburg.

Gabriella Tenret and Alexa Jacobson were each high-point winners in the ‘B’ division as 70 percent of Benicia’s swimmers set personal-best times. Tenret finished first in the 13-14 girls 50-yard backstroke (37.15) and second in the 100 IM (1:18.06). Jacobson took first place in the 15-16 girls 100-yard backstroke (1:18.92) and third in the butterfly (1:15.53).

Aden Li achieved four Gold times and placed second or better in five individual non-point events for Benicia’s 8-under boys. Li took first place in the 25-yard breaststroke (21.27) and freestyle (15.64) and finished second in the butterfly (17.41), backstroke (19.22) and 100-yard IM (1:37.65).

Basil Othman earned points in four events for Benicia’s 13-14 boys and took second in the 50-yard backstroke (39.29). Teammate Jacob Rafac took first place in the 50-yard breaststroke (37.33), Elian Salindong won the backstroke (37.37) and Nate Freemon took first in the 100 IM (1:14.26).

Aidan Zambrano won the 100 IM (2:01.62) in his boys 8-under division while Joey Birdseye earned points in three 13-14 boys events. Second place finishers for Benicia’s boys included Timothy Knox in the 100-yard breaststroke (17-18, 1:19.10), Camron Jacobson in the 50-yard breaststroke (11-12, 37.83), Joey Patocchi in the freestyle (10-under, 39.18) and Justin Mango in the 100 IM (8-under, 2:10.65).

First-place division winners for Benicia’s girls included Kaelyn Campbell in the 50-yard breaststroke (11-12, 46.54) and Olivia Contreras in the 50 butterfly (11-12, 38.72). Kennedy Plummer finished second in the 50-yard breaststroke (10-under, 54.24) and third in the freestyle (38.53) while Skyelar Clouse took second place in the 50-yard backstroke (13-14, 37.27).

The Stingrays hosted Crockett on Wednesday and details were not available at press time. Benicia travels to Martinez for a dual meet this Saturday.
