Stingrays fall to Martinez

The Benicia Stingrays suffered their first Twin Counties Swim League loss of the season after falling 404-298 at Martinez last Saturday.

Benicia (4-1 TCSL) got great performances from its 13-14 and 11-12 girls, helping the Lady Stingrays win their portion of the meet, 179-167. But Martinez dominated the boys 11-12 and 9-10 age divisions and won 237-119 to pull out an overall team victory.

Benicia’s 13-14 and 11-12 girls each swept their divisions. Jessica Scott won the 50-yard freestyle (28.49) and butterfly (32.92) for the 13-14 girls while teammate Cassidy McGuire took first place in the 50-yard backstroke (33.32) and 100-yard IM (1:14.67). Chloe Cotsifas captured the 50-yard breaststroke (37.13) and teamed with Scott, McGuire and Julia Lindemuth to win the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:55.86) and medley relay (2:10.92).

Emma Lindemuth led a sweep for Benicia’s 11-12 girls by winning the 50-yard freestyle (31.42), butterfly (34.31) and 100-yard IM (1:21.05). Kaelyn Campbell won the 50-yard backstroke (47.29), Gabrielle Malte took first in the breaststroke (40.90) and Campbell, Lindemuth, Audrey Matthews and Olivia Contreras captured the 200-yard freestyle relay (2:13.52) and medley relay (2:33.90).

Benicia’s 7-8 girls relay teams did well, with Kayla Zilka, Campbell Cerruti, Aislyn McNamara and Mackenzie Mincy winning the 100-yard freestyle relay (1:32.02) and medley relay (1:46.92). McNamara also won the 25-yard butterfly (25.30).

Alexa Jacobson was a dual winner for Benicia’s 15-18 girls, taking first in the 100-yard freestyle (1:04.36) and breaststroke (1:21.30). Emily Davis won the 50-yard breaststroke (47.69) for the 9-10 girls, Ava McCombe won the 25-yard freestyle (26.38) for the 6-under girls, and the 6-under team of McCombe, Lila Fellman, Madison Smith-Rambo and Ellen Goncharov captured the 100-yard freestyle relay (1:55.52).

Aden Li had another excellent meet for Benicia’s 7-8 boys, winning the 25-yard freestyle (15.87), breaststroke (21.05) and 100-yard IM (1:35.22). Bryce Mincy took first in the 25-yard butterfly (18.10) and teamed with Li, Joshua Becker and Vincent Perelli to win the 100-yard freestyle relay (1:14.96) and medley relay (1:29.61).

Andrew Maichel shined for Benicia’s 13-14 boys, winning the 50-yard freestyle (26.69) and the 100-yard IM (1:09.93). Maichel, Nate Freeman, Jacob Hoenig and Jake Rafac took first place in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:50.20). Maichel, Hoenig, Rafac and Robert Patocchi took first in the medley relay (2:07.38).

Other winners for Benicia’s boys included Daniel Goncharov in the 50-yard breaststroke (11-12, 42.20) and Pierce Tenret in the 50-yard butterfly (9-10, 40.03).

The Stingrays swim at Gehringer on Wednesday.
