Stingray swimmers suffer rare defeat

The Benicia Stingrays swim team suffered a rare defeat last week after a 332-276 loss to the host Pinole Seals in a non-league meet.

Benicia’s girls pulled off a 166-147 victory but the boys fell to the Seals, 185-110. Forty percent of Benicia’s swimmers achieved personal-best times and only five percent had a disqualification.

Alexa Jacobson won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:25) for Benicia’s 15-18 girls and teamed with Lauren Matthews, Gabrielle Wirth and Tara Othman to win the 200-yard medley relay (2:13.34). Chloe Cotsifas captured the 50-yard breaststroke (40.60) for the 13-14 girls while teammate Gabriella Tenret won the butterfly (34.80) and Julia Lindemuth won the freestyle (29.08). Cotsifas, Tenret, Lindemuth and Cassidy McGuire won the 200-yard medley relay (2:09.50).

Emma Lindemuth shined for Benicia’s 11-12 girls, winning the 50-yard freestyle (33.10) and butterfly (39.20). Grace Carrell took first place in the 50-yard freestyle (32.85) and backstroke (43.77) for the 9-10 girls while teammate Emily Davis won the breaststroke (47.06). Mackenzie Mincy won the 25-yard freestyle (20.63) for Benicia’s 7-8 girls and Ali Largaespada dominated the 6-under division, winning the 25-yard freestyle (24.21), butterfly (33.58) and backstroke (32.43).

Andrew Maichel took first place in the 50-yard freestyle (26.36) for Benicia’s 13-14 boys while teammate Robert Patocchi won the backstroke (30.76). Camron Jacobson captured the 50-yard freestyle (31.67) and breaststroke (39.03) for the 11-12 boys and teamed with Jason Ikenaga, Daniel Goncharov and Mario Bonini to win the 200-yard medley relay (2:47.67).

Pierce Tenret was the star swimmer for Benicia’s 9-10 boys, winning the 50-yard freestyle (37.60), backstroke (39.98) and butterfly (37.11). Aden Li dominated the 7-8 boys division with wins in the 25-yard freestyle (16.01), backstroke (18.21) and breaststroke (22.47). Bryce Mincy won the butterfly (20.77) and teamed with Li, Myles Cooper and Mario Stump to win the 100-yard medley relay (1:27.38).

The Stingrays will compete in the 39th annual East County Invitational this Saturday and Sunday at Los Medanos College in Pittsburg.
