Stingray swimmers hold their own at Battle of the Ages

BENICIA SWIMMER Andrew Maichel was the high point swimmer for 14-under boys at the Battle of the Ages in Pleasant Hill.

Led by a strong showing from their boys swimmers, the Benicia Stingrays finished 13th overall out of 17 teams at the Battle of the Ages in Pleasant Hill late last month.

Benicia’s boys finished in ninth place after solid performances from Andrew Maichel in the 14-under division and Aden Li in the 9-under division. Maichel – who was the high point winner for the 14-under boys – took first place in the 50-yard freestyle (23.64) and the 100 free (52.41) and took second place in the 50-yard butterfly (26.99) and 100 IM (1:01.47). Li took first place in the 50-yard butterfly (34.12) and backstroke (36.04), finished second in the freestyle (30.42) and fourth in the 100-yard freestyle (1:12.10).

Jake Rafac shined for Benicia’s 15-18 boys, taking second place in the 100-yard freestyle (53.75), butterfly (1:01.51) and IM (1:02.94) while finishing third in the 50-yard freestyle (25.22). Ryan Klubben was the star for Benicia’s 6-under boys, finishing first in the 25-yard butterfly (22.53), second in the breaststroke (25.10), third in the backstroke (23.10) and fourth in the freestyle (18.99).

Other placers for Benicia’s boys included Joey Birdseye in the 14-under 50-yard breaststroke (40.96, eighth) and William Klubben in the 8-under 25-yard backstroke (20.07, seventh), his first-ever Gold time.

Benicia’s girls finished 15th overall despite a solid performance from Cassidy Mcguire in the 15-18 division. McGuire earned her first-ever Gold time in the 100-yard backstroke (1:08.46, third) and also finished third in the butterfly (1:11.30) and 50-yard freestyle (28.63). McGuire took fifth place in the 100-yard IM (1:11.46).

Madison Smith-Rambo placed in four events for Benicia’s 6-under girls, taking sixth in the 25-yard breaststroke (35.81), tying for sixth in the freestyle (22.57), and finishing seventh in the backstroke (26.10) and butterfly (28.28).

Ashlynn Smith took fourth place in the 15-18 50-yard freestyle (28.78), seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:29.16) and eighth in the 100-yard backstroke (1:17.84). Other placers for Benicia’s girls included Shiya Crawford in the 6-under 25-yard breaststroke (32.45, third); Jessica Scott in the 14-under 100-yard freestyle (1:01.17, sixth) and 50-yard freestyle (27.51, fifth); Skyelar Clouse in the 14-under 50-yard breaststroke (38.20, sixth); Amber Iniguez in the 14-under 50-yard freestyle (27.97, seventh); and Sophia Roth in the 11-under 100-yard freestyle (1:14.81, eighth).

The Stingrays host the Pinole Seals this Wednesday in Tri County Swim League action at the James Lemos Swim Center.
