SPSV volleyball team survives TCAL semifinal scare

The St. Patrick-St. Vincent High boys volleyball team avoided becoming the victim of the biggest upset in Tri-County Athletic League history by holding off St. Joe’s, 25-27, 25-22, 25-17, 23-25, 15-11 in the TCAL semifinals at the Bruins Lair.

Deo Boongaling had 20 kills, 10 digs and two aces for the Bruins (24-9), who will host El Cerrito in Thursday night’s TCAL Championship match. The Bruins haven’t lost a league match since 2008.

Ryan Villaseran added 13 kills and 14 digs for SPSV, which will learn its North Coast Section playoff seed this weekend. Other standouts included Dominic Nicolas (29 assists, eight digs, two aces, two kills), Mark Perez (10 kills, seven digs, two blocks), John Cuevas (22 digs, three aces, two assists) and Anthony Olmes (14 assists, four aces, 10 digs).
