Taya de Alba pitched a two-hitter and Olivia Soley delivered a key hit as the St. Patrick-St. Vincent High varsity softball team opened its season with a 4-1 victory over host Berean Christian last Thursday in Walnut Creek.
The game was scoreless until the top of the sixth inning when the Lady Bruins (1-0) put together their biggest rally of the day. Soley knocked in two runs with a bases-loaded single as SPSV pushed three runs across. The Lady Bruins still had the bases loaded with no one out but couldn’t add to their lead.
Berean Christian scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 3-1, but freshman Chelsea Mari blasted a solo home run in the top of the seventh to give SPSV some insurance.
That was plenty of run support for de Alba, who struck out three and didn’t walk a batter in seven innings.
“Everything went pretty well,” said SPSV coach Rich Gigliotti. “We played really solid defense and Taya pitched really well.”
Mari, de Alba, Neenah Pangilinan and Jaydee Boursaw each had two hits for the Lady Bruins, who host St. Helena on Tuesday. Mari scored two runs.
Awesome job Bruins!!!!! Way to start off your season. Very talented young ladies on the roster this year. Taya has a great defense behind her.
