The St. Patrick-St. Vincent High varsity softball team wrapped up an unbeaten Tri-County Athletic League season with a 11-4 victory over host Pinole Valley on Friday.
It was the 20th win of the season for the Lady Bruins (20-4), who finished 10-0 in the TCAL. It’s SPSV’s first perfect league season since 2011 when the Lady Bruins went 20-0 in the Bay Shore Athletic League.
SPSV got off to a horrible start against the Lady Spartans (13-8, 5-5 TCAL) as starting pitcher Taya de Alba gave up five hits and four runs in the first inning. But the Lady Bruins bounced back with 11 answered runs while de Alba allowed no runs and only four hits the rest of the day.
“It was nice to see us come back like that in a game that didn’t mean much to us,” said SPSV manager Rich Gigliotti. “We could have just folded the tent but instead we buckled down and took the game over. It was probably our best win of the year.”
Jaydee Boursaw hit a two-run homer in a three-run fourth inning that gave SPSV a 7-4 lead. It was the ninth home run of the season for Boursaw, who hit at least one homer against every team in the TCAL this season.
Neenah Pangilinan broke things open with a two-run double in a four-run fifth inning and finished 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs. Olivia Soley also had a key hit in the fifth and went 2-for-4 with two runs and a RBI. Marisa Avalos also had two hits for the Lady Bruins.
SPSV has the No. 1 seed for the upcoming TCAL playoffs and gets a first-round bye.
