The St. Patrick-St. Vincent High girls varsity volleyball team got off to a slow start against visiting Marin Academy on Tuesday and never recovered, losing to the Lady Wildcats 25-18, 25-11, 23-25, 25-11.
Marin Academy (7-3), one of the best Division V teams in the North Coast Section, took over midway through the first set and dominated the second set, forcing SPSV (9-4) to make drastic changes to its lineup. Nikki Lumauod was moved to setter and the front line was shuffled around – anything to get the Lady Bruins going.
“We changed the lineup around to try and light a fire under them and we turned things around and made it close,” said SPSV head coach Danette Domecus. “We really competed in those last two sets and ended it well. It was just unfortunate that it took us so long to get started.”
Lumauod finished with four kills, three aces, 12 assists and nine digs for SPSV. Halle Webster had eight kills, two blocks and seven digs, and teammate Makahla Bolko added six kills, two aces, a block and eight digs. Other standouts for SPSV included Tiffany Diaz (six kills, two aces, 13 digs), Aubrey Cadiz (13 digs, two assists) and Isabel Villalobos (four aces, two kills, two blocks).
“They were a tall team and we got blocked, and we struggled with the mental parts of the game,” Domecus said. “We thought about our mistakes a little too long and we didn’t turn out to play early enough.”
The Lady Bruins open Tri-County Athletic League play on Sept. 22 at Swett.
