The St. Patrick-St. Vincent High girls basketball program concluded its 2013-14 season with an awards banquet Tuesday night in the school cafeteria.
Seniors Patrice Yap, Zaria Meshack, Dot Bibb and Tierney Bates were honored with special awards, with Yap and Meshack also taking home co-Most Valuable Player honors. Yap led the team in scoring, steals and 3-pointers while Meshack led the team in assists.
“This was by far the closest team I’ve had in my four years here, and a lot of that was because of my four seniors, who are very special to me,” said Lady Bruins varsity head coach Nadine Walker.
Sophomore guard Makayla Solano, who currently has a 4.6 grade-point average at SPSV, received a Scholar Athlete Award.
The varsity went only 12-15 overall this season and missed the North Coast Section playoffs for the first time in Walker’s four years at the helm.
“They stayed positive and worked hard in what was a very challenging year for us,” Walker said of her squad. “We struggled through injuries and sickness and were never really at full strength. Had we been healthy, our won-loss record would have been much better.”
Wanna Wong was named the Most Valuable Player for a junior varsity team that went 8-15 this season. Shannon Roach won the Defensive Player of the Year award, Carra Dwyer was named Most Improved Player, and Chelsea Taylor won the Coaches Award.
For the freshman team, Joyce Atilano and Cydney Hampton shared MVP honors. Rebecca Snell was the Most Improved Player and Alexa David won the Coaches Award.
