SPSV football team looks to extend win streak Saturday

September 8, 2016 by Steve Guertin Leave a Comment

Riding high after two impressive victories to open the season, the St. Patrick-St. Vincent High varsity football team will try to extend their winning streak when they take on the Burton Pumas on Saturday in San Francisco.

The Bruins destroyed their first two opponents this season, winning 47-12 at Ygnacio Valley and 46-0 last week at Vallejo. SPSV’s two wins already matches their win total from all of last year.

Senior quarterback Michael Pappas has been magnificent so far for the Bruins, rushing for three touchdowns and throwing for three more in the two wins. Akil Edwards and Jamonte Barrett have been impressive at running back, while Marquel Johnson and Kailon Johnson-Loud have sparked the passing attack.

Edwards set the tone early last week when he tackled Vallejo’s Byron Thomas in the end zone for a safety late in the first quarter. Tyler Chesney recovered a Vallejo fumble and rambled 26 yards for a touchdown, and SPSV’s defense held the Redhawks to only two passing yards and 65 yards of total offense.

Burton (2-0) won by forfeit last week and opened the season with a 20-8 home victory over Madison Park Academy on Aug. 27. SPSV beat Burton, 28-0, last year in Vallejo, but that was the high-water mark for the Bruins, who went on to lose their final seven games of 2015.
