SPSV football team hosts crosstown rival for home opener

The St. Patrick-St. Vincent High varsity football team hopes to notch its first victory of the season when the Bruins host the Vallejo Redhawks on Friday in a crosstown rivalry game at Dante Magnani Field.

It’s the home opener for the Bruins (0-1), who fell 47-28 last week at Castlemont in the season opener. SPSV fell behind the Knights 19-0 after one quarter and never recovered.

SPSV’s offense was able to move the ball against Castlemont. Bruins junior quarterback Michael Pappas had a good night, completing 23-of-38 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns. Fellow junior Anthony Olmes added another 123 yards passing and threw for two scores.

SPSV’s Marquel Johnson had six catches for 128 yards and a touchdown. Timothy Ray caught six passes for 87 yards and a TD, and Alex Olmes and Tyler Chesney each caught a touchdown pass. Alex Garcia led SPSV’s running game with 43 yards on eight carries.

SPSV’s defense hopes for a better showing against Vallejo after allowing Castlemont running back Jihad Stephens to rush for a game-high 204 yards and two touchdowns. Castlemont senior quarterback Joe Feao completed 9-of-18 passes for 144 yards and four touchdowns.

The Redhawks (0-1) are looking for their first score of the season after getting blanked at Natomas, 7-0, in their season opener. Senior quarterback Tyler James completed only 1-of-7 passes for 10 yards and had an interception. Vallejo rushed for only 96 yards on 37 carries against Natomas. Senior Sam Anitoni (jersey No. 44) led the way with 55 yards on 13 carries.

Vallejo’s defense limited Natomas to 178 total yards and only gave up a lone touchdown in the third quarter. Austin Santos and Malik Brown each had a sack, Andrew Garcia intercepted a pass and Danjo Nueva Ealja registered a team-high eight tackles.

Last season at Corbus Field, the Redhawks scored 14 unanswered points in the second half to beat the Bruins, 14-13. Friday’s game is only the second meeting between the two teams this millennium.
