Visiting De La Salle used a quick-paced offense and a stingy defense to sweep the St. Patrick-St. Vincent High boys varsity volleyball team Friday night, 25-17, 25-17, 25-20.
It was the first loss of the year for the Bruins (4-1) and the second year in a row De La Salle (2-0) has handed SPSV its first defeat. The Bruins were relatively even with the Spartans midway through each set, but De La Salle always had a late run saved up for crunch time and consistently pulled away.
“We played a decent game, but they had a quicker offense than the other teams we’ve faced and their serve receive was pretty good,” said SPSV senior John Cuevas. “They were really scrappy on defense.”
Senior Patrick Basco led the Bruins with seven kills and seven digs. Dominic Nicolas had a dozen assists, Alex Olmes added five kills and three digs, and Matthew Peters chipped in a couple of kills.
Though the Bruins were humbled by the defeat, they weren’t going to let it get them down going forward.
“We looked at this match as a learning experience,” Cuevas said. “I think this will help us for the rest of the year.”
The Bruins return to Tri-County Athletic League action Tuesday at Salesian.
