In the more than 40 years since the Vallejo Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. was chartered in 1974, the chapter has provided more than $200,000 in scholarships to deserving high school students pursuing higher education. The tradition continues this weekend as the chapter awards scholarships to five local high school seniors as part of the sorority’s Youth Talent Showcase, taking place at the Dan Foley Cultural Center in Vallejo Sunday.
“We are delighted to spotlight local talent and to shine a light on the achievements of students in our local community,” Nona Cohen-Bowman, president of the Vallejo Alumnae Chapter, said. “As a public service sorority, we are committed to making a difference in our community and helping others, especially our youth, to succeed.”
In additional to the scholarship presentation, the event will showcase the local talents of 12 students from Vallejo and Benicia, grades 3 through 12. Prizes will be awarded to the top competitors in the areas of song, spoken word, dance and video presentation. Students will also be awarded points based on their response to impromptu questions from a panel of judges.
“So often, we read negative news about troubled youth in our communities,” Cohen-Bowman said. “This event is a chance to celebrate the accomplishments of some very talented young people.”
The Youth Talent Showcase takes place Sunday, May 22 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Dan Foley Cultural Center, 1461 No. Camino Alto in Vallejo. Tickets are $20 and are available by calling Youth Talent Commission Chairwoman Lizabeth Griffin at 373-2028. Tickets will also be available at the door.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the chapter’s scholarship program.
