Soccer season came to an end for the St. Patrick-St. Vincent High boys and girls teams on Thursday after both squads were shut out in the first round of the Tri-County Athletic League playoffs.
The Lady Bruins lost 3-0 at El Cerrito in a Rock Division contest and finished the season with a 3-10 overall record. The Bruins fell 5-0 at home to Pinole Valley in a Stone Division game and finished with a 6-8-1 overall record. Neither SPSV team is expected to qualify for the North Coast Section playoffs.
“I know we were on the wrong end of the result, but I thought we played really well,” SPSV boys coach Greg Coan said after Thursday’s loss. “We made them work, created some opportunities and defended them pretty well.”
Pinole Valley scored three times in the first half and added two more in the second half. Goalkeeper Bryan Moran was spectacular in net and recorded the shutout.
Despite the defeat, the Bruins were happy with their 2014-15 season. The Bruins hadn’t won a game on the field in nearly four years entering this season.
“I’ve played here since freshman year and played through all of the losses,” said SPSV senior Musa Dajani. “We persevered and finally got some wins this year. We’ rose up from the ashes. We’ve built something here and I think we’re putting our school on the soccer map. I have no regrets this season, other than I wish we had some more games.”
“We played with a sense of pride this year,” added senior Marquis Perrilliat, who was the Stone Division’s Defensive Player of the Year.
“We improved so much since our first game this year,” Coan added. “It hasn’t always been easy but we had a sense of pride and changed this program. I can’t be more proud of them.”
