History was made when American Canyon beat Benicia High’s girls golf team, 299-317, at Chardonnay on Tuesday.
It was the first league loss for Benicia since 2009, snapping a string of 69 straight Solano County Athletic Conference victories.
“If we’re going to lose, let’s make it in the middle of the season and not in the league championships,” said Benicia golf coach Mike Prolo.
Other than sophomore Sofia Young, Benicia’s other five starters Tuesday had little to no high school golf experience. Young was her usual self, firing a 39 to win medalist honors by 16 strokes. Teammate Sydney Jones added a 65, with Megan Saari shooting a 68. Lacey Tsutsui finished with a 72 and Lauren Tsutsui rounded out Benicia’s scorecard with a 73.
“Five of our six girls had never even seen Chardonnay before and some had never played any official matches,” Prolo noted. “A 317 on a very windy day isn’t a bad score for five newbies out there. The kids hung in there and played their best.”
American Canyon was led by Mita Zeneracion, who shot a personal-best 55. Jyne Velono shot a 58 and Jessica Poehleman shot a 59. American Canyon’s Nos. 4 and 5 golfers each shot a personal best, with Kari Williams firing a 61 and Melita Poehleman shooting a 66.
Benicia dropped to 3-1 in the SCAC, half a game ahead of American Canyon and Vanden (2-1 SCAC).
Benicia takes on Vanden at Green Tree on Thursday.
