The Rotary Club of Benicia is turning 50 years old and is inviting all former members and any other interested people to a special noon luncheon on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at the Yacht Club. There is no charge for former members.
The Club was founded in 1967 as part of Rotary International, the world’s first service organization. It originally had eighteen members and one, Jack Bell, still attends. For over five decades Club members have included representatives of government, the professions, business, the trades, education, and many other occupations.
Fifty years of philanthropy have provided scholarships for youth, youth leadership training, dictionaries for school children, playgrounds, monuments, holiday meals for underprivileged families, and many other community projects. The Club has donated thousands of dollars in support of the Rotary International polio eradication program. In part as a result of the Rotary Polio campaign, there were fewer than 35 cases of polio across the world in 2016. As part of the international program for Rotary, the Benicia Club donated $32,000 to the Little Flock Orphanage in India. For the last ten years, the Club has acted as the parent-teacher organization for Liberty High School by providing tutors and mentors, rebuilding the green house, and funding academic field trips, art and music classes, and the student yearbook.
Former members are encouraged to bring in photos and other memorabilia of years gone past. Interested former members and members of the public are encouraged to RSVP at 707.208.7247 or—better– email at hutchshopping@comcast.net.
