Residents thwart burglars, police say

May 27, 2015 by Donna Beth Weilenman Leave a Comment

■ Suspects reportedly escape, sans goods, after neighbors block car

Alert neighbors — including one who blocked a getaway car’s exit — apparently foiled an attempted burglary early Monday at an unoccupied home in the 1200 block of West K St., Benicia police Lt. Frank Hartig said.

One neighbor told police that two individuals were in the back of the home about 5:37 a.m. Monday, and that they possibly were carrying out stolen property, he said.

“The witness neighbor was able to keep a visual on the two subjects,” Hartig said. That neighbor said the two people left the house’s rear yard, heading toward the West 12th Street Park.

The two individuals approached a vehicle in the park’s parking lot, Hartig said, but the vigilant neighbor was helped by another resident, who used personal cars to block the lot’s exit.

That prevented the getaway car from leaving, Hartig said.

As the vehicle blockade was put in place, the two individuals walked toward the shoreline, the witness told police.

Benicia police officers, a Vallejo police K-9 officer and Solano County Sheriff’s deputies set up a perimeter and sought the suspects, Hartig said.

However, “After an extensive search, it was determined the subjects had probably escaped out of the perimeter,” he said.

Along the path from the house to the car in the parking lot, officers found various household items, a television and a bicycle Hartig said had been removed from the house.

He described the suspects as Hispanic, male, short-haired adults between 20 to 30 years old, last seen wearing dark jackets. One was wearing blue jeans, he said.

“Our detectives are working on identifying the owner of the vehicle that was left behind,” Hartig said. The department is requesting a search warrant so officers may search the vehicle for its contents, he said. “This is an ongoing investigation.”
