Prospective county grand jury members sought

March 12, 2015 by Donna Beth Weilenman Leave a Comment

The Solano County Superior Court of California is looking for volunteers for the 2015-16 civil grand jury, especially those willing to serve consecutive terms, Presiding Judge E. Bradley Nelson said. Prospective applicants need to have lived in Solano County for a year, and need to be U.S. citizens who are at least 18, he said.

“The civil grand jury, as part of the judicial branch of government, is an arm of the Superior Court,” Nelson said.

He described the grand jury as the county’s investigatory body that may examine any aspect of county and city government, special districts and school districts “to ensure that the best interests of the county’s citizens are served.”

He said the grand jury also looks into complaints citizens may file when they suspect governmental misconduct.

Nelson said grand jury service is a time commitment of about 20 to 25 hours a week. Service starts July 1, and the term concludes June 30, 2016.

Grand jurors may serve two consecutive one-year terms, he said, and “Service provides citizens with a unique opportunity to contribute to the efficiency of local government.”

Those interested may call Administrative Assistant Cheryl Clower at the Office of the Grand Jury at 707-435-2575 or visit www.solano.courts.ca.gov. Deadline to apply is May 29. All applicants will be notified by mail of the orientation schedule.
