Benicia High’s baseball and softball teams embark on quests for Sac-Joaquin Section championships Wednesday in Sacramento.

The Panther baseball team (17-10) drew a No. 6 seed in the Division II Tournament after taking second place in the Solano County Athletic Conference. Benicia takes on No. 3 seed Antelope in an elimination game Wednesday at 4 p.m. at American River College, with the winner advancing to a best-of-three semifinal series.

Benicia’s softball team drew the No. 1 seed in Division II after going 23-4 overall and 15-0 in the SCAC.

“You hope you did a good enough job all season long for the committee to recognize you,” said Benicia softball manager Kristin Grubbs. “It’s really great that we got the No. 1 seed.”

The Lady Panthers are the defending Division II champions and will face No. 16 seed Downey (Modesto) in an elimination game Wednesday at 4 p.m. at the Sacramento Softball Complex. The winner advances to an eight-team, double elimination format.

Downey went 11-11 overall and tied for third place in the Modesto Metro Conference, sneaking into the playoffs thanks to a tiebreaker. The Lady Knights are coming off a 13-0 loss to Gregori last Wednesday.

“It’s playoffs and it’s anybody’s game at this point,” Grubbs said.” We just have to play hard and play our game no matter who we face. If we play like I know we can, I think we have a really good chance of winning against anybody.”
