A possible live grenade closed portions of downtown Benicia Sunday as police investigated the item.
Around 5:15 p.m., a young boy found a grenade in the water at the bottom of First Street. The boy took the barnacle-covered grenade to show to his father who called the police immediately after discovering what was brought to him.
Police rushed to the scene and closed off the area. Officers canvased the area of area of First Street between G and H streets and made sure no residents were home at the time. All businesses in the shutdown area were told to close and evacuate their customers through the back doors as a precaution as well.
Travis Air Force Base Explosives Ordnance Disposal were called in to assist in the safe disposal of the grenade at round 8:40 p.m. The grenade was safely disposed of 25 minutes later.
The Benicia Police Department opened up the area again following one final check to make sure everything was safe.
