Staff Report
A Benicia High School teacher who had previously been arrested for allegedly possessing edible cannabis and stolen property on school grounds was discovered to have allegedly had an inappropriate relationship with a student, the Benicia Police Department said in a news release.
Police arrested Riana Lane, a 23-year-old special education teacher, Monday after she turned herself in to the police. The incident began in early April when school employees had notified the Police Department about a 17-year-old male student— whose name will not be released due to his age— who was seen frequently leaving campus multiple times over the course of a week. After being questioned by police, the student said he was going to Lane’s car. Police said they learned that Lane had allegedly given the student her keys, and upon investigation, they uncovered two pieces of property that had been stolen in March as well as a small amount of edible marijuana. Police said Lane admitted to possessing the marijuana, and the student admitted to placing the stolen items inside Lane’s car. The student was arrested on petty theft and released to his parent. Lane was arrested and released on a misdemeanor citation for possessing stolen property and marijuana on school grounds.
According to an email sent out by Charles Young, the superintendent of Benicia Unified School District, Lane was placed on leave after the initial arrest and the district was working to hire a long-term substitute.
In the most recent arrest, Lane was charged with oral copulation with a minor and unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, police said.
Police say the investigation remains ongoing.
